How It All Began

Having grown from a small annual conference, CLAN Gathering began in the summer of 1998 with over 300 people meeting throughout the week in the Assembly Hall of Madras College, St Andrews.

Working in partnership with New Wine, under the leadership of Kenny Borthwick and Chairman Andrew Lawson Johnston, the team’s vision was to see the nation changed as the church in Scotland was resourced and renewed, and the next seven years saw rapid growth. The main venue moved from the Assembly Hall, to the Games Hall, to a marquee erected across the college car park, to accommodate the 4000 people who attended in 2005.

The following year, the Gathering moved to a green field site in Strathryrum, where a blue turreted tent housed the thousands who came. 2006 also marked the development of CLAN Networks and Ministries, as the team sought to further support and equip church leaders and individuals throughout the year.

After another two years at Madras College (2009-10), CLAN Gathering returned to Strathtyrum in 2011 with much thanks and praise for all that God has done through the work of CLAN over the last 12 years, and sense of great excitement and anticipation as we wait to see all that He will do in the years to come!

A Missionary Movement

During CLAN Gathering 2010 there was a clear call to become part of a missionary movement, a movement that the leadership team believe God is raising up in Scotland. This call resonated in the hearts of many, and it is the call that lies at the heart of CLAN’s vision for the years ahead.

As we pursue this call, we will seek to develop and continue to:

  • run and facilitate national events
  • support like-minded churches and church leaders through events, retreats and training schools
  • partner with missional organisations
  • encourage new expressions of church and church-based initiatives
  • invest in the next generation to see them discipled, equipped and encouraged

Our desire is to see the work of CLAN and our partners become an even greater blessing to our nation.
